6 Things Australians Are Good At

Only six? Now there’s an understatement if I ever saw one. Aussies are so darn good at life that several of their cities, Melbourne and Sydney included, find their way to the very top of the list that announces the most livable cities in the world every year. Literally. But, if we have to pick our favorite six from a whole slew of things this happy nation does right, then let’s focus on what makes them stand out despite being so secluded from the rest of the globe.

Brunch

Smashed avo on toast with the side of mango? A green smoothie packed with protein? A veggie omelet, brunch muffins with a cup of coffee or a plate of seafood to share? Apparently, brunch, much like any other meal of the day is treated with the care it deserves, at least Down Under.

Locally harvested seasonal ingredients are a huge hit, healthy options always abound and not to mention the sheer selection of versatile choices at your disposal. You’d just want to stay in some of their famous eateries for hours on end and enjoy slow food served in sunshine like a true Aussie.

Coffee

This is not just something to lure you, coffee hedonists, into their cafes, but even for your average freshly squeezed orange juice lovers, because you’ll love their brews to the very last sip. They take coffee breaks seriously. And they take ‘em to a whole new level of hipster, out-of-the-box delicious.

Ever wondered what strawberry and honey-infused espresso tastes like? Or a cup of dark chocolate, orange and caramel? Coffee has become a local specialty, and with such imagination, there will be something to everyone’s taste, even if you aren’t so crazy about coffee in the first place. In Australia, you will be.

Wine

If you’re looking for pure bliss in a glass, Aussies have a knack for creating entire sarabandes and serenades out of a single vintage hidden deep in their vineyard valleys and basking in their never-setting sun. Yes, tasting good Australian wine is the closest thing to discovering the aromas of Eden, because that, ladies and gents, is how their grapes feel in your mouth.

Lose yourself in their Shiraz, Cabernet Merlot or Sauvignon Blanc, and you will not be disappointed. They grow these wines all across Australian territory, making sure to infuse their bottles with rich aromas, fun fruity twists and delicate scents known only to locals.

Surfing

Surprise, surprise, right? Because who else has such mesmerizing, sandy beaches, rugged coastline and friendly waves – due to their natural wealth, almost permanent sunny weather (and disposition, but that’s a whole different chapter), they’ve managed to build a world-renowned reputation for this beautiful sport.

Wherever you look, there’s at least a few beaches nearby ready to test your surfing skills: Byron Bay’s the Pass is a well-known destination both for locals and tourists alike, Northern Beaches in NSW, South Cape Bay in Tasmania and Gold Coast are just some among many to produce many a friendly barrel.

Wildlife

And no, it’s not just the poisonous snakes, spiders and other vicious creatures. No, the country is filled with incredibly friendly mammals that embody Australia’s joyful, life-loving attitude, so it’s no wonder that the kangaroo, koala and quokka get more selfie requests even than the beaches and sunsets.

But, what Aussies are truly brilliant at is preserving and protecting their nature and wildlife, through numerous organizations, national parks and education alike, helping people get back in touch with nature and increase their interaction with their local wildlife.

Chocolate

Last, but definitely not the least delicious and relevant, is Australian love for chocolate, which they so diligently express in every truffle, bar and bonbon they make. And they do know how to make them memorable, even for the pickiest of chocolate lovers out there. From the famous Haigh’s Chocolates, where you can find some of the world’s tastiest almond clusters and fudges imaginable.

For gluten-free health freaks who’d also like a chocolate punch but without erupting with sugar rage, Liefje uses maple syrup instead of the sweet white stuff, and has no dairy in their product range. And at the KitKat Chocolatory, you can go wild and make your own KitKat bar – or if their numbers are anything to go by, up to 1500 different KitKat combos!
