Unconventional Bride: 4 Alternatives to a Diamond Engagement Ring

For the unconventional bride who is thinking about a break from the traditional diamond engagement ring, consider the following 4 unique gems as alternatives to the diamond.

These 4 options have moderate to high Moh’s scale scores, which is a scale of hardness used in minerology and will be important for an engagement ring you will wear every day.

Sapphire

Blue sapphire engagement rings can be a beautiful alternative to a diamond engagement ring as evidenced by Princess Diana’s and now Kate Middleton’s engagement rings. Sapphires are one of the first known gemstones and have a hardness of 9 out of 10 on Moh’s scale. Some state that a sapphire used in an engagement ring symbolizes faithfulness and sincerity.

Ruby

Rubies, often viewed as symbols of long lasting passion and affection, are another popular alternative to a diamond engagement ring. Like sapphires, rubies also have a hardness of 9 out of 10 on Moh’s scale and traditionally, they have been paired with diamonds and yellow or rose gold bands for a beautiful look. While rubies are typically blood red, there has been a rise in blue ruby engagement rings as well.

Emerald

Emeralds used in engagement rings have been said to symbolize luck, peace and longevity in a marriage and that combined with the beautiful green and blue tones of the stone have made it a popular choice for engagement rings. However, emeralds only have a hardness of 7.5-8 on Moh’s scale and because the emerald is softer than some other stones, it makes it more fragile to cut so not all jewelers may be able to design an emerald engagement ring.

Morganite

Morganite has also risen in popularity over the years and using it as your engagement ring stone is said to symbolize that your match is made in heaven. Morganite ranges in colors of pink, from pale blush, rose, peach and salmon and its beautiful, feminine color makes it a desirable alternative to the diamond for an engagement ring. The most popular shades are the lighter shades of morganite.

In addition to these unique gems there are many other gems that you may consider as an alternative to a diamond for your engagement ring. Today, many brides are looking for a ring that stands out from other rings and also captures their unique style so do your research and find the ring that is perfect for you.

  1. May I suggest the infamous minimalist engagement ring? I know it has been mocked on social media(and newspapers) , but I find it perfect (and cheap!)
