How to Make Your Home’s Entrance Say “Hello”

Some people believe that a home’s entrance is like a person’s face. The expression or tone of your entry can make visitors feel valued and welcome. Whatever the style of home may be, here are simple tips to make your entrance more welcoming to friends and relatives.

The Walkway

To reach your home’s entrance, access is needed through a porch or stoop, steps, a sidewalk, or a walkway. Inspect your walkway or access point to ensure it is clean, smooth, and in good condition. A grime-studded walkway is not very welcoming to guests who are concerned about their footwear. Nor does a weed-choked sidewalk convey a positive image of your home. Sweep or power-wash the sidewalk or steps leading to the door, and trim hedges or tend any flowerbeds that line the front of your house.

The Door

Your home’s door gives a distinct impression of your style and decorative taste. A fresh coat of paint can give the front of your home a facelift. Repair minor scratches or dents on the door if you are able to. Consider replacing your current front door with a trendier version like double doors or a more ornate style. Entry doors that are clean, neat, and attractive make guests feel welcome and establish a positive tone for your home overall. If the door has windows, make sure they are clean and covered with blinds or curtains that are in good condition.

Accoutrements

Don’t forget the little extras at your front entrance. Polish the doorknob and clean the doorbell or knocker. Sweep away dust and cobwebs or wipe clean the door lintel and frame. Put down an attractive welcome mat in front of the door. The overall effect should be appealing so that everyone will admire their first impression of your house. You may want to paint the stoop or the porch if they are peeling or looking dull.

Accents

Add colorful accents to your front entrance when feasible. If you have a porch, hang a porch swing or set up a glider. Place seasonal flowering plants near the door or on one side of the steps. You could also set them on the porch banister if you have one. A hummingbird feeder or windchimes provide a natural touch that many people find relaxing and enjoyable.

It doesn’t take much to spruce up your home’s front entrance. With minimal cost and effort, you can create a fresh new look that will make guests eager to visit and step inside.
