Foundations are a great makeup product but not many people know how to use them properly. If you are struggling with your foundation, you are probably making the same common mistakes that most people make when using this makeup product. Using foundations doesn’t have to be difficult but it does take some practice to get it right. Here is a list of the top 5 common foundation mistakes that most people make:
- Not Matching Correctly
One of the biggest mistakes women make when choosing their foundation is testing the color on their hands instead of their neck. For the most accurate match, test on the neck just below the jawline. If you will be showing your chest, match your foundation to your chest, then blend upwards towards your neck and face. This method works only if your chest color and your face / neck color is of a similar tone.
It’s important to look for the right undertone, too. “Cool” skin typically has a pink undertone, where “warm” skin has a yellow undertone. Choose a foundation with the right undertones for your skin, whether it’s cool, warm or neutral.
- Applying With Your Fingers
While it can be tempting to apply foundation with your fingers, it should be considered one of the cardinal sins of foundation application. Not only do your fingers have bacteria and oil that can lead to breakouts, but using your fingers can cause streaking and uneven application.
Instead, use a foundation brush or a makeup sponge. For liquid foundations, stick to a brush with synthetic bristles, which won’t absorb and waste product.
- Not Throwing It Away When You Should
Too many of us are guilty of holding on to makeup far past its expiration date. Foundation that has begun to expire will oxidize, or turn darker, when applied. It can also harbor bacteria that is harmful to the skin.
Water-based foundations are typically good for up to a year, while oil-based formulas can last up to 18 months. Be sure to store your foundation away from heat, and if you notice that the product has started to separate, toss it.
- Not Using Primer
The right primer will help your foundation look flawless and last all day. Primer creates a smooth base and gives your foundation something to stick to.
There are different primers out there for virtually every skin type or skin problem. Hydrating formulas will keep dry skin from looking cakey. If your skin tends to be oily, a mattifying primer will control shine.
- Not Setting Correctly
Just as important as priming your skin is setting it once your foundation is applied. You can opt for a setting spray or a powder, depending on your skin type.
Dry skin will benefit from a hydrating setting spray while powder can keep shine away from oily skin. If you go for a powder, try to stick with translucent powders instead of heavy or tinted formulas.
